East Sussex Cricket League InterSport of Lewes Trophy - 2017 - Quarter Final versus Herstmonceux Cricket Club
St Peters Cricket Club 268 for 8 (S. Wheatley 71, S. Coomber 61*, N. Toomey 3-31) beat Herstmonceux Cricket Club 110 for 9 (R. Doyle 3-13, C. Wood 3-20) by 158 runs.

On a pleasant and bright day St Peters batted first on a pitch offering good pace and carry – Sam and Mike got us off to a solid start putting on 80 for the first wicket, Sam looking particularly fluid, with drives and cuts a feature of his innings, which continued his good form from the previous week.

Mike was the first to fall (26), playing across the line and out LBW. Hopey arrived at three and began a frenetic assault on the bowlers, taking the aerial route. Sam and Hope put on 50 for the second wicket until St Peters suffered a wobble… an excellent run out saw Sam depart after an brilliant innings (71) and next ball Hope holed out for (27). Duncan didn’t last long playing on for a golden (0) and Coey came and went chipping tamely to mid-on for a duck – this left us 139-5 and in danger of not converting our strong start.
Sips was the next to fall (1) driving the spinner on the up to gully – this bought St Peters recovery specialist S. Coomber to the crease. Roh had looked in good nick until he played one too many sweeps and was bowled (20) leaving us in the slightly precarious position of 159-7. Wazir hit a couple of customary sixes until he was bowled (17).

Scud (61*) and Marco (31*) then staged the much needed recovery, taking us from 180-8 to 268-8 at the end of our allotted 40. Both players rotated the strike well and punished the bad ball. Scud clubbed some big straight sixes to finish the innings with style and Marco chipped in with a six as well!

After a pleasant tea, St Peters were in the field. Sips and Waz taking the new ball -With attacking fields and tight bowling, Herstmonceux struggled to match the required rate and lost wickets in clusters. Waz struck first, removing the opener, caught behind and Sips was soon in on the action bowling the other opener – 27-2. It was clear from this stage that the oppo were using the rest of game as a net and St Peters kept 5 catchers behind the wicket for the rest of innings.

Charlie came into the attack and bowled the dangerous looking Billy Hobden and was later on a hattrick for the second week running after having the oppo skipper caught behind and bowling the no. 6 batsman first ball – 53-5. Marco bowled a tight 7 over spell and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket.

Herstmonceux dug in and blocked. Roh came on (in an effort to get through the overs as quickly as possible!) bowling a mixture of cutters, off breaks and long hops and somehow picked up 3 wickets.  Duncan managed to pick up a wicket, with an excellent catch by Charlie at mid-wicket.  This left the oppo 106-9 and even with the return of Sips and Waz we couldn’t capture the last wicket. Hertmonceaux finishing on 110-9 from their 40.

A good performance with bat and ball from St Pedros, who will now face Plumpton in the Semi-finals in September. #COYS
